Business Card Paper

There are many varieties of business card paper, the key characteristics and differences of the main ones are described below.

If you plan to make new business cards, pay special attention to choosing business card paper. Business card paper contains ready business cards, perforated or glued with tape, which can be split by hand. Normally, a sheet contains 8 to 10 business cards.

There are several things to keep in mind while choosing a paper type for you business cards. To begin with, decide on the printer you're going to utilize.

  • For simple design (text with black & white graphics) a monochrome laser printer will be all right.  If you utilize laser printer, avoid using textured, glossy and magnetic paper because it may damage the printer.
  • For cards with color designs use an inkjet or color laser printer. If you use inkjet printers you can put there any type of paper.

Following are the types of business card paper:

Coating type

You business card may go with the following coatings:

  • Regular.
  • Matte. Matte card has a dull surface that is not shiny.
  • Glossy. Glossy paper is a good choice if you want your photo to be printed on the card. Such paper may cost twice as much as regular paper, but the quality will be perfect on an inkjet printer.
  • Textured. Textured paper can add distinctive look to your cards.

Don't forget that textured and glossy papers are not compatible with laser printer.

Separation ways

There are a number of methods to hold business cards in place on the sheet, and they influence the overall appearance of the cards after they are split.

  • Perforated business cards have slightly rough corners. The price for them is 50 % less than for the cards with smooth corners.
  • Smooth corner business cards give the impression of being more professional. When you split the cards, their corners look flawlessly even. Such cards are cut beforehand and put on a paper or connected by sticky tape from the back.

Including background image

If you want to print some background image covering the entire surface of your card, it is necessary that you should choose the paper with gaps between cards. As a rule such paper will contain eight cards per sheet.

Pre-printed cards

Some paper manufacturing companies (such as Paper Direct in the USA, Decadry or Sigel in Europe) make business cards with pre-printed background. If you want to use such cards, think about the position of pre-printed image when creating your design and locating your message.

Always consider these positions before printing your cards to get the cards that are really striking.
