Business card technology

On one hand, you may think that on the background of advancing technologies business cards are no more than small pieces of paper with text and pictures on them. On the other hand, such rapidly developing spheres of human activity as commerce, entrepreneurship and economics find business cards very useful and cannot give up ordering, printing, distributing them.

It may be unclear at first sight, but advances in technology serve for developing business card industry too, and sometimes it brings about investment of great amounts of money.

Devises scanning business cards

CardScan Business Card Scanner and IRISCard Pro Business Card Scanner are the most popular scanners on the market nowadays. These devices are very efficient; they work as text-sensitive scanners i.e. a business card can be not only scanned into a computer but also converted for editing. In addition, they are portable enough to be taken even in a business trip.

OCR technology used by most scanners guarantees great accuracy of exporting to a digital format, so most scanners are designed to update address books of your software automatically. It enables you to put any detail of your business cards into address books as Outlook in no time. Scanners are capable of recognizing e-mails, phone numbers, addresses and names and can structure information correctly before adding it. Provided a scanner cannot recognize information, the information will be classifies it as unrecognised and will be put in a special field “Unrecognized” or something like that.

One of the advantages of business cards scanners is the convenience to use them. Many scanners are small and can be connected with PC or laptop by means of USB cable. It enables business persons to work with electronic data of their address books whenever they want instead of typing business cards details by themselves. Other business card scanners can be easily connected to 3G cellular phones for database updating.

Barcodes, code reading technologies

QR or “Quick Response” code was developed by Japanese company DENSO Corporation and now it works for almost every aspect of business in Japan. The code itself is a two-dimensional barcode that suits to high speed decoding (to scan a QR code less than a second is needed) and contains much data.

In Japan QR codes are very popular. They are printed on business cards to enable businessmen to transfer information into address books they have on their cell phones. That is why most Japanese cell phones are designed to be able to read QR code through scanning with phones’ camera lenses.

Colour coding is another technology applicable to business cards. Cell phones equipped with cameras can read colour codes and update databases pretty easily. Colour codes can be scanned with cell phones from the distance of 10 meters.

Now it is somewhat difficult to guess which code reading technology will prevail and gain recognition throughout the world. None of them might succeed anyway. Colour code developers have to charge those business owners who want to use their technology for advertising purposes. QR code in the same time requires using special software and thus entail in charges for cell phone producers.

Two abovementioned technologies are sure remarkable, but in view of scientific progress, technologies applicable for business card industry are mushrooming.
