Business Cards Etiquette in China

This wonderful country is full of secrets. Without background knowledge, any European may feel confused, especially in the sphere of business. There are certain pieces of advice you should know before handing out your business cards to your Chinese partners.

  • Before asking for somebody’s business card, it would be more polite to present your own card.
  • When a business card is offered, study it for a while before putting it in your rolodex. Only then you should greet the other party.
  • When sitting at the table, place previously received business cards on the table and study it.
  • Hold out your card with both hands with the text facing the other party.
  • It is considered to be very impolite to write on someone's business card.
  • Use Simplified Chinese translating text of your cool business card. Simplified Chinese is the most commonly used script today in most parts of China (the traditional script is used in Hong Kong and Taiwan). Depending on the regions of China you will be doing business in, the right dialect should be used (e.g. Cantonese vs. Mandarin)
  • The title should be listed prominently on your business card. And don’t forget to mention all significant facts about your company (e.g. it's the largest or oldest in your country).
  • Gold symbolizes luck. So it can happen to be a great idea to use gold color in the design of your business cards (for example gold metal business card).
